| Though he didn't get the result he wanted, FC Frederick U-13 head coach Chuck Hommey couldn't stop smiling after his side's 3-0 loss to PSC Baltimore in Wednesday evening's Maryland Youth Soccer Association's State Cup finals match at Linganore High. His girls represented themselves well throughout the tournament and didn't disappoint during the first State Cup championship game played in Frederick County. "These girls have really worked hard, and put a lot into the season," Hommey said. "I'm just really proud of the effort, even though we lost. That's a good team over there and hats off to PSC Baltimore. We're a good team too and it was a great match." Baltimore's Anna Borowski tallied all three goals. She scored two goals in the first half, and knocked in a loose ball off a corner kick for the hat trick during the second half. The State Cup is a tournament staged by the Maryland Youth Soccer Association and open to club soccer teams from across Maryland. Twenty-five teams filled the U13 bracket. While it was not the case on Wednesday, three of FC Frederick's five State Cup contests were one-goal affairs, with two requiring penalty kicks. Wednesday's match was originally scheduled for this weekend at the Harford Polo Grounds in Harford County. However both Baltimore and Frederick were already scheduled to compete in the prestigious Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) Tournament of Champions in Raleigh, N.C. Hommey was asked to find a venue and came across Linganore, who's administration offered him their field. "It's unbelievable," Hommey said. "It's never happened in the history of FC Frederick, or much less in Frederick County to have a game of this magnitude. It's wonderful." "This was really awesome to play here, because we didn't have to go that far," FC Frederick goalkeeper Meghan Laser said. Following the game, Frederick gathered on the sideline with their parents and supporters in a jovial manner. They accepted their runner-up medals and posed for a series of photos while singing Lady GaGa's hit single "Paparazzi." Like Hommey, they couldn't stop smiling. Other FC team members include: Tanner Bradley, Annie Breen, Shannon Cooley, Kate Ericksen, Alyssa Farahati, Danielle Ferris, Sydney Giangiuli, Megan Kelly, Sarah Kovalchick, Christi LaBella, Annie Marshall, Madeline McArthur, Maddie Pack and Mary Pritts. |
